Relocating your i5, iSeries or AS/400 server?

There are many things to consider when relocating a production server, or simply in moving the ‘service’ from one physical system to another. We will manage the entire process, making all the necessary arrangements to ensure your success:

  • Site surveys
  • Decommissioning and re-commissioning
  • Contracted relocation through 3rd party companies
  • Backup and restore planning for resilience
  • Contingency system provisioning for Disaster Recovery

We have achieved seamless relocations from Edinburgh to the south of England, logical ‘service’ relocations from the USA to Scotland, and numerous ‘local’ relocations between sites only tens-of-miles apart.

Consolidation

The new IBM i5 servers have achieved such astonishing gains in power/performance relative to price, that an entry-level system may well have the power and capacity to support services that you may have previously run over multiple servers. Consolidation makes real sense, especially when lower maintenance costs, environment costs (power, air-con. or reduced foot-print charges in managed data-centres) and even licensing costs are taken into consideration.

If your current iSeries or AS/400 servers run services that must remain logically distinct, due to time differences or language support requirements, then consolidation can still offer real advantages when combined with the Logical Partitioning (LPAR) capabilities of the new i5 servers – see below for further details.

LPAR – Logical Partitioning

We have LPAR’d systems here at our offices which we use for training and support. If you’d like to get to grips with the practicalities of building, moving, managing and optimising OS/400 or i5/OS partitions, we’re equipped to show you how. With in excess of 15 individual partition implementations for a broad spectrum of customers, there’s a track-record of success to support our expertise in this field. We will help you with all aspects of OS/400 or i5/OS partitioning implementation:

  • Pre-planning, performance analysis and capacity reviews
  • LPAR validation and hardware specification
  • Partitioning builds and data migration
  • Resource sharing optimisation
  • Training and documentation

Hardware

When considering upgrades, many customers find it difficult to ascertain the suitability or pertinence of hardware configurations supplied by prospective vendors. This is especially the case now that the permutations available allow for so much flexibility in the way you can build a suitable server. We’ll assist you in determining your real requirements, and if you so desire, we’ll help you get the best price for what you actually need.

Whether it’s pre-owned or new equipment you’re interested in, let us help you get the best value.
